Alma College Baseball Opens MIAC Benson Schedule Away

The Alma College baseball team begins the Michigan Intercollegiate Benson with two away games at Olivet Friday and Kalamazoo Saturday. Despite recent losses the Helmer coached squad is said to be strong and must elevate play to win. Six players are needed to strengthen the lineup as positions settle this week. Next week Alma hosts Hillsdale and Gray, a standout pitcher, is expected to deliver strong work.

Gratiot County Men To Report For Camp Custer Duty

Forty nine Gratiot County men are summoned to report Saturday morning to depart for Camp Custer and enter Uncle Sam’s service. Tonight the Methodist Episcopal Church parlor hosts a banquet and entertainment by the Men’s and Young Men’s classes. An officer from Camp Carter will discuss expectations, addressing the men’s concerns about what lies ahead and the reasons for the draft and war effort.

Alma Boy Dies in Alabama War Hospital

Elisha Ewing Alma young man in the United States service died in a government military hospital in Alabama after a short illness. His parents Mr and Mrs 4 Ewing were notified and left for the south. It is expected his body will be brought home to Alma, to occupy the first soldier grave here of the brave sons who have gone to the front.

The community reports multiple deaths over the past week. Olive L. Lathrop of Elwell died Monday at St Marys hospital Saginaw after an operation attempt. Susie Enterline aged 78 died at her daughters home Burton Young. Baby Elizabeth Klinkleth daughter of B W Price died age two months after short illness. Ralph Copeland motor truck driver died after illness in South Carolina. Conrad W Baker a Toledo farmer died after two days illness in Toledo. Navy Recruiting Station to Visit Alma Weekly

Navy recruiting officer will be in Alma every Wednesday to examine recruits for the U S Navy. All branches are open. Examinations at the Army recruiting station with ages 14 to 44 allowed for enrolment. Men registered for the draft may enlist but need a release from their local draft board. Each applicant must show an age certificate or sworn statement proving age and citizenship before examination. Transportation will be provided to Detroit. For more details see the Army recruiting station on Friday or the county Navy recruiting committee chair. Applicants must be at the recruiting station between 9 AM and 12 PM and 1 PM to 5 PM each Wednesday.
