Alma History Highlights Early Presbyterian Roots and School Ties

In 1865 Rev. Jonas Denton of Massachusetts helped form a Presbyterian presence in Alma. He aided Sunday school work and library drives, influencing church development across Pompeii, Lafayette, and a St. Louis church. A 1866 meeting aimed to place the St. Louis church in Alma, but the society organized in Alma February 5, 1866, with S. Anderson as long-term trustee. Denton later left. Rev. Clark took over. The era saw temperance efforts, a Good Templars lodge founded March 20, 1886, and a singing school led by Maggie Chapin and Ella Chapin with local youths attending. Prices from 30 years prior show flour, butter, eggs, syrup, cheese, sugar, and road conditions shaping daily life.
