Alma City Council Debates Office Consolidation Plans

Mayor N F McClinton called a special session to hear reports on uniting city offices for the year starting May. The majority urged merging street, marshal, and park duties under one man, plus combining water works and sewer supervision. A minority proposed pairing water works with street duties instead.

Alma to Host Gratiot Odd Fellows Day Parade

Gratiot County Odd Fellows assemble in Alma next Monday weather permitting. The parade follows the noon southbound train led by the Ashley band to the opera house for the program. Visiting cantons will perform drills in the afternoon and Lieutenant Governor Patrick Kelly will speak at the opera house in the evening.

Car Load of Silos Sold by J M Montigel Dealer

J M Montigel the implement dealer reports a car load of Saginaw Handy Silos sold to numerous farmers. Montigel continues to push spring sales with farmers bringing home new machinery and wagons from the sale room.

Brush Car Demonstration Highlights Tough Michigan Roads

Ray Smith and J. B. Knapp traveled from Alma to Detroit to bring back a Brush demonstration car. They returned via Lansing on schedule, but rain and mud between Lansing and Alma made the trip arduous. Mr. Smith praises the Brush as an all around car, noting the arduous journey through mud and worst roads yet.

Alma depot blamed for mud and crowding at busy station

Eugene Zimmerman of the Ann Arbor railroad voices outrage over Alma station conditions. He cites a four month Ireland trip and accuses Pere Marquette officials of neglecting travelers amid mud filled platforms and dripping rain. Calls for city action to improve walkways and shelter for the busy union depot.

Dr Erwin Operated On For Appendicitis In Ann Arbor

Last Friday Dr Erwin accompanied by his father and Dr McClinton left for Ann Arbor where at 2 00 p m he was operated on for appendicitis. He was not seriously ill until about 4 00 p m when an acute attack led to the operation. He is reported recovering and his full restoration to health seems assured.

Frances E Spinney obituary notices Alma and Ewart

Frances E Spinney died at her son John D Spinney’s home in Alma on Saturday evening April 17. Funeral services were held at the residence by Rev Harry L Crain and the remains were taken to Ewart Mich, home of her daughter Mrs Frank Lovereen, for services at her daughter’s home conducted by Rev Fo Sonrrah. She was laid to rest in Forest Hill cemetery. Bearers were six Knights of Pythias from Alma. Mrs James Kress accompanied the party to Ewart as a family friend. Born January 1, 184? in Panama NY, maiden name Frances Davis. She married Andrew B Spinney July 1, 1800 in Panama and leaves a son and daughter. Baptized Presbyterian as infant. charter member of Warren Avenue Presbyterian in Saginaw, later transferred letter to Ewart Presbyterian. She had been a grandmother in two households, known as kind and warm hearted, beloved by Alma residents.

A Good Stroke Of Business Demonstration in Mt Pleasant

The Mt Pleasant Courier reported the recent two day demonstration at C F Marsh’s grocery as the greatest ever in Mt Pleasant. The firm sold nearly fifty barrels of Alma Bread Flour and served hot coffee and National biscuits. Frank Lettingweil won nearest to the number of Revere coffee kernels in a quart can and received half a barrel of Alma Bread Flour. Wm Wilson next nearest got a quarter barrel and Mr Vanderman won a free one eighth barrel.

Mail Carrier Lester Thomas Arrested After Leaving Post

Local readers recall Lester Thomas, a mail carrier who quit his position last fall leaving unpaid bills and his family in distress. He was found in Rochester, New York, this Monday as the sheriff arranged to return him to Gratiot county to face charges.

Alma Board of Trade Banquet Set for April 30

The first annual Alma Board of Trade banquet will be held at the Wright House on Friday evening. Tickets are on sale at $1.00 each and must be paid for by next Monday evening. Friday Night's Entertainment at Montana Opera House

Heavy rain did not dampen Friday's show at the Montana opera house. The performance was hailed as one of the strongest in days, despite an onstage accident when Mr. Hert Dibble suffered facial injuries from a premature explosion. He finished the act, then traveled to Saginaw for hospital treatment.

Record Liners Pay For Garden Sond Ads

The Record reports a parcel from Congress map F. H. Dodds with 11 packages of garden seeds from the agriculture department, available at the office by application. Each caller received one package and the supply sold out within forty eight hours after mailing. The five liner did the work. Use the advertising columns for selling or exchanging items.

Confirmation Services at St Johns Church

Confirmation services were held at St Johns church this week under Bishop Richier with Father Kroegger Merrill Father Miller Glaswin Father Whelan Carson City and Padier Mulvey Alcom. Fourteen were confirmed four adults and ten children and took their first communion. The church was decorated with carnations and lilies and the services were largely attended despite rain and storm.

Billiard and Pool Tournament At K of P Club

The K of P club hosted a billiard and pool tournament last Thursday evening with twenty plus members in attendance. Six played billiards and ten vied for the pool prize as the club room proved a splendid venue for members to enjoy an evening and future events are planned.

Tornado at Cleveland Leaves Casualties and Devastation

A tornado swept through Cleveland and northern Ohio yesterday, killing three people and fatally injuring six while destroying property valued above 81 million dollars. Mrs. E. C. Crandall attended the funeral of Mrs. Odell in North Star last Thursday.

Gratiot County's Townsend Ely Named State Highway Commissioner

Governor Warner nominated Townsend A. Ely of Alma to succeed Horatio Earle as Michigan state highway commissioner. Ely, a Gratiot County pioneer and former state senator, has held village president and postmaster roles and helped author the good roads bill. His four year term begins July 1 with a 2500 dollar salary.

Beautifying the depot lawn with roses and honeysuckles

Mrs Frevots King leads a city beautification effort at the depot, planting Hall's honeysuckles on the south posts and Dorothy Perkins Rambler roses to the north. When blossoms appear the view from trains will please riders, while a north side screening wall could improve impressions of the city and hide refuse piles along the railroad right of way.

Cleaning Up Bays Cleanup Days Set by City and League

The Civic Improvement league and the city council designate Thursday April 29 and Friday April 30 as general cleanup days. Residents are urged to clear streets and alleys adjacent to their property to maintain sanitary conditions.
