Smallpox Claims Another Victim in Muskegon Case
In 1916 Mason faced school vaccination, a girl avoided it and stayed healthy. In March 1922 at Hackley Hospital Carol Ellsworth, unvaccinated Mason girl, contracted hemorrhagic smallpox and died. Her mother, initially refusing vaccination, gained access after consent. The husband, Homer Ellsworth, unvaccinated, fell ill and died days later. Dr. Olin urged vaccination for all children as duty and protection of others.
