Missionary Letter From Hawaii Describes Early Hawaiian Missionaries
A former Alma College alumna and missionary in the Hawaiian Islands writes to the Ladies Fortnightly Club of the Presbyterian Church. She recalls 1820s Hawaii, the taboo system, the swift spread of schooling, and the first written Hawaiian language with fourteen letters. She notes harsh early life, gradual modernization, diverse foreign communities, and the challenge of preserving native culture while teaching Christianity. The account closes praising missionary efforts and highlighting figures like Rev. Titus Shields and the varied church presence in Hawaii.
