Helman Wins Chair As Fuller Loses Seven Ballot Battle

In a heated Board of Supervisors race, Jacob D. Helman defeats Jesse E. Fuller on the seventh ballot to become chairman. The vote tally moved from a near tie of twelve each to a 13-11 break for Helman, marking Alma’s first chairmanship since P. M. Smith nearly fifteen years ago. Committee appointments followed at the Wednesday session. Alma College endowment drive lists nearly a thousand donors

A citywide campaign for Alma College ends with more than 89 000 dollars raised for a gymnasium and auditorium costing 110 000 dollars. The roll of pledges over 100 dollars includes many named individuals and local firms, with a note that the list continues on page eight.

Bishop Coming Delayed Lecture At College Chapel

The University of Michigan librarian William Warner Bishop will lecture on The University Library in the college chapel Saturday evening April 1 at 8:00. He is a respected lecturer who has spoken across Michigan and the country. The talk is expected to be engaging and instructive, following his illness postponement and now set for this weekend.

Knights of Pythias Stage Benefit at Strand Theater

Alma lodge of Knights of Pythias presents home talent play The Lesson of Friendship based on Damon and Pythian with motion pictures at the Strand Monday evening. Cast rehearsed for weeks. Alma Chamber joins national chamber of commerce

The Alma Chamber of Commerce reports its election as a member of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States of America on March 21. Debating Teams Ready For Annual Forensic Battles

Worley purchases St Alma Tailors stock and moves shop

A. L. Worley shoe dealer, based in the Pollasky block, buys the stock of St Alma Tailors on East Supering street. He will relocate to the new premises shortly, expand by adding ready to wear goods, and continue the shoemaking and tailoring business. Alma College endowment drive reaches total for gymnasium

The Alma College fundraiser in Gratiot County closed Monday evening with 4475,000 raised from Alma sources toward a gymnasium auditorium. President Crooks and James A. Barkley praised the effort, trustees vowed to match prior Alma gifts, and a steering committee was appointed to finish remaining work. Additional pledges came from St. Louis, Ashley, and Bankister, boosting the county total as campaigns run in multiple towns. A card of thanks followed for bereavement support and afterwords a poem and a film notice concluded the page.

Myers Body Coming Home From France

The body of Corporal George W. Myers, Alma native and first local casualty in France, will be returned for burial. Myers, of Company K, 120th Infantry, fell at the Battle of the Marne in July 1918. The town honours him with the George W. Myers Post named after him. Also noting Alma High’s season opener against Ithaca High Friday at Republic Field, expected to feature seven current players in the lineup.
