The Commercial Radiophone Company is organized in Alma to open the first exclusive radio store in the area. It will sell and install complete radio receiving outfits and may manufacture parts locally depending on success. A broadcasting station is planned using a former Ann Arbor set, licensed by the government, with programming from a 1000 mile radius.

The Alma high school debating team, once undefeated, fell 3 to 0 to Owosso last Friday. Owosso delivered strong delivery and earned judges’ votes though Alma showed weak form. One judge favored Owosso 76 to 74. Alma drops from state cup contention. Owosso remains among eight hopefuls. Coach Van Hoesen and team members John Holmes Dave Strong Elliot Crooks praised for reaching sixth win in seven debates. Crawford is sentenced to up to twenty years in prison
Alfred F. Crawford, Breckenridge, was convicted of embezzlement from the First State Bank of Breckenridge. Midland Circuit Judge Hart sentenced him to from one to twenty years in prison with a recommendation of two and a half years. The Michigan Supreme Court upheld the conviction. Auditor reports indicated shortages totaling over 340,000 dollars, with the largest item around 2,000 dollars. Crawford, once a prominent politician, faced a highly watched case. A large Breckenridge crowd observed the sentencing as Crawford showed visible distress.

Wheel Company Manager Dies
A.C. Chapman, manager of the Northern Wheel Company of Alma, died suddenly at the Wright House. He was about 45 and had led the firm through early 1921 production gains. Funeral plans had not been announced. Chapman was a noted Michigan industrial executive formerly with Michigan Hersey and Motor Company and a large Jonesville factory. The Northern Wheel Company, hit by the 1920 downturn, recovered under his leadership, marking the largest monthly business last month. He is credited with much of the company’s post January 1921 revival. Arthur Lippert to display Acme Beet Harvester at Idlehour Theatre lobby for a week.

Residents should set clocks ahead one hour before bed Saturday night to avoid being late for church and other events. Several Deaths During Past Week In Alma Area
The past week saw multiple deaths in Alma and nearby. Mrs Ora Chapman 45 died after three weeks illness at a local hospital. Willam Wither 71, yard foreman at the Republic, died at home after several days illness. Mrs Jessie Fry, age unspecified, wife of B E Fry of near Crystal, died at her daughter’s home and was later transported to Crystal for funeral. Funeral services and officiants are noted for each.

Helman daved DD. Helman supervisor of the fourth ward was re elected chairman of the Gratiot County board by 14 to 11 votes among 15 Republicans and 10 Democrats. His opponent was Jesse Fuller of Alma. Republicans called the move a courtesy to the popular last year’s chair.

Phil Lewis of Alma High School won the sub-district Michigan Interscholastic Oratorical League contest in Owosso with The Hope of the World. Five schools competed Ithaca St Johns Corunna Laingeburg and Alma. Judges ranked him first for delivery and first or second for thought and composition, qualifying him for the district contest near Ann Arbor or Howell. Alma coaches Barnhart and Lewin begin intensive training for the district show.

County loses good officer from Typhoid in Gratiot
Charles L. Heisler longtime Gratiot county register of deeds died at his Ithaca home after a two week typhoid illness. A Republican official, Heisler served as New Haven supervisor before being named register of deeds after April 22, 1921. Funeral services were held in Ithaca with Masonic burial in New Haven cemetery.
