College authorities consider dropping athletics to focus on training male students for service. With military drill viewed as essential, debates center on resource allocation, campus impact, and potential changes to student life.
The Alma College faculty largely supports military training if a capable drillmaster can be secured and universal service may prompt the switch from athletics. Dean Mitchell and several professors in favor argue training would prepare students for national service, while others remain cautious about wartime implications.
Two young men Susdorf and Wilcox fired at targets at Aya Hall sugar bush near Alma damaging buckets and pans. Deputy Wheeler said they will likely settle for the cost of the damage to avoid broader trouble. One of the youths had recently paid a fine for an unrelated college incident.
By authority of the board of education a general dental inspection of pupils in public grade schools will soon be conducted. The city has offered services for this work. If defects are found a notice will be sent to parents. The program is optional and parents may object by notifying the superintendent. Pearl of the Army is coming.
Judge Charles J. Willett a former Gratiot resident and long time Pasadena California official died at his home in Pasadena last Thursday April 5 He was born in Essex New York June 5 1847 and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1871 He practiced law in St Louis where he held civic roles and later served as Gratiot prosecuting attorney Regents of the University of Michigan and member of Pasadena boards including education hospital and city attorney roles He was also treasurer mayor and city attorney of St Louis and led Throop College trustee boards and Pasadena Hospital association for many years
A tamiedt show will be given at Meight Opera House Wednesday and Thursday evenings April 8 and 9. Proceeds go to Red Cross. Features include The Scottish Masters dancers Baby Kathleen Millard Reid Louise Millard Gordon McPowell with seats at Bellgner's drag store 25 cents children 3 for adults.
Theodore Kress, known as Ted, a former Alma and Ithaca high school athlete and newly elected captain of the Ithaca track team, passed a medical at a local recruiting office and will depart next week for Grand Rapids for the first exam. He plans to join the aviation corps, starting in the signal corps after gaining experience, with parental consent obtained due to his being under eighteen.
Page and J Grover enter the west part of the Stills building, formerly Walby the Gray Gallery store, to form an office for real estate. Page brings seven years of experience and will handle farm and outside work, while J Grover makes his first real estate venture, focusing on city work and overall operations.

The Common Council adopted an ordinance to collect taxes twice annually in Abma, in July and December. The July tax will be the city tax roll, and the December roll will determine the county tax with city assessment. The move aims to aid municipal development and ease taxpayer burdens during winter.
The Gratiot County Teachers association holds its fifty sixth semi annual meet at Alma high school auditorium on Saturday April 21 1917 with speakers President Charles McKenny of Michigan State Normal and Professor George B Randall of Alma College. Programs include morning and afternoon sessions with lectures readings and a minutes reading and election of officers. The local Eastern Star chapter elected officers for the coming year at a meeting last week Friday including Worthy Matron Mrs May Elton and Worthy Patron William J Huff. The meeting is set for Thursday evening April 17.
The Crandell and Scott furniture opening drew several hundred Alma residents over tense late week events. The gala featured popular period furniture designs and a grand demonstration with carnations and refreshments for attendees.
Alma High School prepares for a major debate against Sonia and Big Rapids set for April 20 at the high school. Teams include Alma, Big Rapids, and student debaters from Lakeview and Mt. Place with coaches Vander Zahn and Civainey guiding training and preparation.

A group of nine Ithaca high school students left this morning to enlist in the United States Navy. The move reflects postwar military service trends and local youths joining national defense forces.
Students from Alma's high school answered the nation’s call and enlisted in the United States Navy. A send off featured banners, patriotic songs, and speeches praising duty and safe return. The departing seniors, including Watson McCall and others, had earned diplomas they would have received that day.
Harrie Willard, a top poultry enthusiast from Alma, earned sixty awards across Battle Creek Grand Rapids Ionia and Alma shows. Honors include four silver cups, twenty one first prizes, twenty second prizes and fifteen third to fifth place ribbons, with cups for best cock in English, best hen in English and best hen overall. Alma entries featured White and Orpington varieties. Also note four local enlistments postwar drive with Gilcoy Bowe Kress Shank joining various branches and Wayne Michigan school superintendent change.
Dr Gardner of Alma is named among Michigan's top one hundred volunteers expected to join the army when a call is issued. Other physicians who may be mobilized were reportedly in the latter part of last week or early this week for review and call. Gardner, aged about fifty five, is described as fit for service and to remain in reserve until drafted.

Triad of colleges Hope Olivet and Alma plan debates this Friday at each campus. Olivet debates Alma at the Holland site while Alma hosts Hope at the Alma college chapel. The resolution favors equal treatment for Chinese and Japanese citizens with Europeannation standards, promising spirited contests.
Ten workers began a Tuesday wage strike demanding a 50 cent raise. Three resumed work when no raise appeared, two took a half day off, then returned. the others remained idle during the brief stoppage.
Alma College opens Friday with a home game against Mt Pleasant Midian led by Chief Nevitt. The lineups feature new infield and outfield hopefuls, promising a stronger squad and a push for the M I A A title.
The Friday of next week Coach Vander Zian will lead the high school football team against Ithaca high in the opening game of the 1917 season. With only four veterans back, the coach faces a hard task as he builds a squad capable of winning. Early games will test the lineup as many new players are being trained.
Dr Brainerd announces Dr E Gardner of Mt Pleasant will spend the second and fourth Mondays each month in the hospital for eye and refractive work. He invites friends to seek Gardner services when needed.
