The city commission awarded paving for two blocks on South Woodworth Ave to Alma firm Bartling Crane & Holmes for 8505.58, over lower bidder Straight & McNutt. Mayor Murphy said contracts must use Alma labor where possible and weather and equipment favor an May 10 completion.

Busy Time at the Christian Church

The F Superior Christian church will install Rev H H Anderson as pastor this evening with Rev J Frank Green and Rev Garry L Cook as guests assisting. Officers will be ordained and installed. The church hosts the Young People gathering with a varied program and out of town speakers. A decision meeting, music, stereopticon and programs are planned. The Disciples of Christ emphasize evangelism and aiding widows and orphans.

Piano Company To Move Soon

The Sawkins Piano Company led by manager Joseph Sawkins rents the Gibbs block store on East Superer street from the National Clothing Company and plans to move by May 1 after remodeling. A removal sale will reduce stock before the move, and the Holiday building will be taken over by Alma News Company as Sawkins vacates.

Alma College to Have Henry Churchill King as Commencement Speaker

President P M Crooks of Alma College announced Henry Churchill King president of Oberlin College will deliver the commencement address at Alma College on June 24 in the chapel. King, a noted lecturer and former president of the American Association of Colleges, has spoken at Harvard and Yale and served with the Y M C A in France. His message is expected to draw graduates and friends and fill the chapel to capacity.

Friday Named M A C President In April Transition Quiet

David Friday becomes Michigan Agricultural College president and H H Halladay named secretary on April 1 with no formal inaugural. A June commencement or Founders Day may host the ceremony. Baltimore Transit Adds 26 Republic Knight Motored Buses

The Baltimore Transit Company has ordered 26 Republic Knight-Motored Buses from Republic Truck Sales Corporation Alma Michigan after a five month test period on the Charles Street route. The test achieved 55 miles per gallon overall and 4 miles per gallon after a 30 day chassis test, with over 16 000 miles run and repair costs under $36. The bus design emphasizes low ground clearance, ample space, and quiet operation enabled by the Kolelit Steere Valve Motor, aiming to supplement existing rail transit.

Train collision injuries stun local couple at Pere Marquette crossing

Mrs A Morrow badly bruised and her husband narrowly escaped death when their car was struck by a freight train at the Pere Marquette crossing on State Street. The engine backed down the track in darkness, the headlight not shining toward the crossing, leaving the motorists and passengers with injuries from the impact and glass but no fatal outcome. Mr Morrow, employed at the Chevrolet Garage, described not seeing the train until a short distance from the track.

Weekly Editors To Hold April Meeting In Michigan

New Sugar Beet Contracts Ready in Sugar Beet Industry

State to Build Gravel Road on Trunk Line No 46 West

At a Tuesday meeting the state highway department decided to construct a sixteen foot gravel road with culverts and bridges on trunk line No 46 west from Alma. Four townships Seville Sumner Mine River Arcada share the 4.5 mile project with assessments split 24 14 14 24 percent. State county and district cover the rest and bids will be invited with completion aimed for December 1.

Board Majority To Republicans In Gra tiot County

The Gra tiot County Board of Supervisors tilts Republican after Monday elections. Twelve Republicans and nine Democrats were chosen, with Alma holdovers bringing the total to fifteen Republicans and ten Democrats. Odd Fellows Initiation and Dance Planned in Local Lodge

Last Monday a large class was initiated by the I O F with a luncheon by the Rebekahs. Next Monday the first degree will be conferred. A dance is set for Thursday evening April 14 at the I O F hall, with all members wives Rebekahs and friends invited. The organization has aided many families during two years of unemployment, using proceeds from entertainments for this cause.

Aged Woman Dies From Burns After Fire

Flora McCall, 79, died Friday six weeks after sustaining severe burns when a fire destroyed A. F. Crawford’s Breckenridge home. Survived by three children, Archie and Ray McCall, a sister, eight grandchildren, and a Maple Rapids sister, with services in Ithaca after body was moved from Breckenridge.
