Severe storms lashed Terre Haute and Wabash Valley causing downed trees and power lines. In Sugar Creek area waters rose to 10 feet, forcing residents to flee. four thousand five hundred phones were out and flash flooding affected Knox and Daviess counties with widespread damage.
A pickup overturned after colliding with a car on U S 31A near Columbus. Teens David Decker 16 Thelma Hobbson 18 and Nora Hobbson 16 burned to death as a gas line ruptured and the cab caught fire. Driver Florence Gaier 50 sustained non serious injuries. Robert Lunsford 23 witnessed the blaze but was halted by the heat.
Dehydration from extreme heat kills nine children and sends 28 to hospital over three days in Ciudad Aleman and nearby towns along the Papa loapan River valley Veracruz state. Temperatures exceed 111 degrees.
William Stultz of 1338 South Eighth street Clinton Indiana an employee of the Public Service Company suffered an apparent heart attack while making repairs at Samson and Laura streets Dresser. He was rushed by Bedino ambulance to St Anthony Hospital where he was pronounced dead The body awaits coroner's investigation at Bedino Chapel of the Valley
Street and road crews and utility workers labored through the night to clear streets and restore power and telephone service. Additional crews remain on duty today with the Civil Aeronautics Administration communications teams also continuing to aid in reestablishing services.

George E. Bushnell, sovereign grand commander, arrives in Terre Haute to preside over the dedication and consecration of the new Valley of Terre Haute cathedral at the former Wabash Hippodrome Theatre. A banquet and program on mental health research are planned with Indiana dignitaries attending.
Douglas Wardrop, second mate of the freighter Monarch, fell overboard 1,000 miles from Panama en route to Japan. He swam nine hours before Captain John Coutts rerouted the ship to recover him. Wardrop, known for earlier pond and river incidents, was found unharmed amid shark-infested waters.
Band leader Jimmy Dorsey, 53, died today of cancer at Doctors Hospital after January surgery for a lung growth. He was the brother of Tommy Dorsey and had left his band two months earlier to enter the hospital. Funeral plans were incomplete. He is survived by his mother, a daughter, and a sister.
The thirty second annual D A V state convention opens in Terre Haute with National Commander Joseph F Burke attending. Commander Lewis Caton hosts at Terre Haute House as reservations reach 500 to 600 delegates from 98 Indiana chapters.
United Press reports a Pentagon spokesman denies personally authoring the claim that GI William Girard enticed a Japanese woman before firing on a firing range in Japan. Robert Dechert says he was misquoted and regrets the misunderstanding. The Miami Herald reporter stands by his quotes, and editors back him. Continued on Page 6.

In Shamokin Pennsylvania at 7 a m on Tuesday 19 year old Frank Punnock a coal mine helper trapped about 100 feet below the surface in shale remained alive despite dimming hope. About 50 rescuers worked in one hour shifts in the narrow shaft trying to reach him as the slide buried him under 30 to 50 tons of rock while he supervised a coal art in the independent operation owned by his father George.

The Pilgrim replica Mayflower II was towed by a Coast Guard tug into Provincetown harbor for an inaugural American anchorage. The 92 foot bark entered at 11:25 a.m. for a reenactment of the Mayflower compact. It then planned a 25 mile voyage across Massachusetts Bay to Plymouth for a landing reenactment.
