In Colorado, a Santa Fe freight train struck a pickup carrying about 26 migrant workers near Rocky Ford. Twelve people died and several survivors were gravely hurt. driver Sylvester Licano was killed and sun glare was blamed for the accident.
The Conservatives led by John Diefenbaker won the most House seats in Canada’s election, ending 22 years of Liberal rule and likely forming a minority government while Liberals expect Prime Minister Louis St Laurent to resign. With several seats undecided, results showed Conservatives ahead in seats though trailing in the popular vote.
A U S defense official disclosed that GI William S. Girard enticed a Japanese civilian closer to a guarded area by throwing expended shell cases before firing the fatal shot. Testimony from Japanese witnesses and Girard's American companion suggests the act was a departure from duty rather than an intentional killing.
CHICAGO June 11. State's Atty. Adamowski reports new shortages in Cook County treasurer's office may push total taxpayers' money losses beyond 1.6 million dollars. Failures to collect interest on foreclosed taxes over 10 years cited. He seeks funds for special auditors and says losses could reach one million, adding to prior 600 thousand in overpayments. He calls it a potential scandal involving three offices. Civil actions will pursue missing interest.
Brother Norman, Gibault School for Boys director since 1952, departs Thursday for a new Brothers of Holy Cross post at Boys Ranch in Bedford Texas. Brother Armand, longtime faculty member, to serve as summer director. The Knights of Columbus praised Brother Norman for his leadership and the school’s progress.
Sen. Gore reports to Justice Department testimony linking Maurice A. Hutcheson head of the Carpenters Union with high profits from land deals on an Indiana expressway project. The probe names two other Carpenters officials and two ex Indiana Highway Department officials.
Harry L. McCullough, principal of McLean Junior High School, will become director of business and research for the school city effective Aug. 1. He succeeds Loring C. Halberstadt who retires Aug. 22 after 37 years with the city schools.
President Eisenhower, described as virtually recovered from a stomach upset, returned to his White House office this morning. He arrived before 10 a.m. and planned to sign letters and work, though his time was not specified. A 9 a.m. bulletin reported a comfortable night and normal vital signs with rest recommended.
Frank C. Wright aged 41 of 512 South Fourth street faced a drunken driving charge after a warrant issued by County Prosecutor John Jett. The case followed a March 12 incident near Farmersburg when a motorist said Wright's car nearly forced him off the road. The charge was later dismissed for lack of prosecution, and key witnesses say they were not notified. Wright was released on his own recognizance and a trial was set for Saturday.

The State Department, at the request of the Justice Department and Senate Rackets Committee, has temporarily suspended Dave Beck's passport after a Tacoma federal court denied his request to attend a Paris labor conference. Beck faces trial on tax evasion charges of $56,000 for 1950 and aiding in preparing a fraudulent return. he remains free on a $5,000 bond.
Lawyers for Army Specialist 3/C William S. Girard argued in U S court to block Japanese prosecution for a death. Government voices warned U S foreign relations would suffer and Japan would gain by overruling the U S Japan agreement. The Defense Dept contends Girard was not on duty. Eisenhower reportedly supports handing him to Japanese courts.
Indianapolis dispatch reports ex Governor Craig aide William R. Sayer testifying before a Marion County grand jury investigating highway land purchases. He avoids questions and deflects by stating he lives in Florida. The panel may also probe sales of the engine oil additive Glo to the state.
Five persons were killed on Indiana highways Monday including a Mount Clemens Michigan father Evis Sutton who died after IU commencement near Bloomington. His wife Mabel and two daughters were injured. Also Janet Downie 19 died in a station wagon wreck west of Latrobe Pennsylvania. A Connersville rider Jerry Marcum lost control of a motorcycle. Buddy Readnour injured. Donald Bledsoe died at an Evansville crossing. Betty Lou Vandenberg perished in a two car collision on Ind 421.
