Americans curb savings and cash in bonds as inflation climbs past 5 percent. Households tap insurance policies and borrow against assets to cope with surging prices and taxes amid sustained economic pressure.
May redemptions of savings bonds and freedom shares outpaced sales for the sixth straight month, with a $12 million outflow versus a $36 million inflow a year earlier. Personal savings as a share of disposable income fell from 7.1% to 6.1% in early 1969, while records from savings institutions and life insurers indicate financial strain and growing policy loans.
Market reports show hogs in Indianapolis with mixed net gains across weights and sows higher, while Chicago demand remains steady to firm for 1-4 and heavier cuts. Cattle and calves provide limited offerings with varied slaughter and beef prices, and grain futures edge lower across wheat and soy.
Two masked men attempted a daytime hold up at the Indianapolis Athletic Club desk. Guard Willie Jenkins, 26, a Vietnam veteran, fired four shots and one suspect fled while the other, Thomas Smith, 29, was shot and wounded at an entrance. Jenkins is a soldier stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison.

Brazil Ind July reports a new field drainage method using plastic tile in continuous sections. At the Lloyd Butt farm in Posey Township 2600 feet of modern plastic tile was installed by contractor William McCloud of Brazil. The trial aims to assess advantages over conventional clay and concrete tiles, without predicting full replacement.
James R. Milliner 53 of New Albany pleaded guilty to assault and battery with intent to kill in the August shooting death of Frederick Messenbrink 34. He was originally charged with second degree murder and received a 214 year sentence. Messenbrink had addresses in California and other states.
