Recon Jet Believed Lost After Aleutian Takeoff
A massive air search focused on the Bering Sea for a four engine RC135 air reconnaissance plane with 19 aboard that vanished thirty minutes after takeoff from Shemya. The aircraft was en route to Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks. The Pentagon said the plane was not shot down.

In Sainte-Mere-Eglise France the 25th anniversary of D-Day is marked with paratroopers and veterans returning. Gen Eisenhower led Allied forces as U S troops and British Canadians and Free French liberated towns and beaches. AP reports Viet Cong rockets and mortars struck more than 100 allied bases and towns in South Vietnam in the past 24 hours. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad will operate the 287 mile Chicago Evansville line of the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad from 12:01 a.m. today after signing the purchase in Chicago. President William H. Kendall said the acquisition will provide improved one line service from the Great Lakes to the Gulf and enhanced freight service between Chicago and Evansville.
