Vigo County records first drowning death
Eighteen year old James Eugene Allen of 1635 North Third street died in a drowning at a deep strip mine pit one mile south of Seelyville. He disappeared while diving from a boat and was recovered after about 40 minutes in 30 feet of water. He was pronounced dead at St Anthony Hospital. His companions Lloyd Welker and Max Hyde were 20 and 19 respectively. Rescue efforts were led by deputies and state police with fire department personnel assisting. Continued on page 2.
