Jurors Deliberate Only 90 Minutes in Indiana Slayer Case
In Princeton Indiana Leslie Irvin known as the admitted slayer of six persons faced death by electric chair after a Gibson County jury convicted him of first degree murder in the shooting death of Evansville service station attendant W Wesley Kerr. The all male jury recommended the death penalty and deliberated about an hour before going out to lunch and about another hour before returning the verdict at 7 15 p m CST. Judge A Dale Eby deferred sentencing until after January 1 and commended jurors for their patience. Irvin who is 31 and an Evansville pipefitter showed no emotion as the verdict was read his mother Mrs Alice Irvin cried and Irvin told her they would appeal. Defense attorney Ted Lockyear said an appeal is expected citing bias and prejudice against the defendant. The case involved a December 23 robbery slaying spree that also killed Mrs Goebel Duncan and three others including Mrs Duncan’s husband son and daughter in Kentucky. The column notes the trial lasted five weeks and that the defense contends Irvin could not receive a fair trial in the area.

Indiana may trim school year by a week
Indiana could stretch or trim the school year by a full week after Attorney General Edwin K. Steers ruled that an eight month year may have 152 days, an eight month year 162 days, and a nine month year 172 days. State Superintendent Wilbur Young said the ruling allows dismissals for holidays and may add a paid week off for teachers.
