Space centers celebrate the Gemini 7 mission with Frank Borman and James Lovell landing aboard the aircraft carrier Wasp after a 13 day 18 hour flight. The ceremony featured live TV coverage beaming to the US as the crew endured a tight reentry and a calm Atlantic splashdown.
France faces a Sunday presidential runoff between incumbent Charles de Gaulle and Socialist contender Francois Mitterrand. In the Dec 5 first round De Gaulle led with 45 percent while Mitterrand had 32. Right-wing candidate Tixier-Vignancour drew 5 percent and centrist Lecannet 15. undecided voters numbered about 22 percent. Mitterrand seeks to unite opposition voters amid doubts about De Gaulle’s stability and overseas empire stance.
In Saigon the Viet Cong exploded a grenade near an American officers billet as security fears rose during a fifth straight day of attacks. U S officials reported several Vietnameses injured while Montagnard tribesmen rebelled in four highland provinces seizing towns and hostages. U S bombers also hit the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos as Gia Nghia fell to mountain tribes. Continued on Page 11 Col 6.

Donations to the Tribune Star Fund will provide Christmas baskets for the City and Vigo County. Contributions from Thomas Funeral Home, George and Elsie Fuson, Tribune-Star Press Room, Beltone, and others totaled about $1,474.00 so far. Applications for baskets are to be made in person to Mrs. Mary Smith at the Christmas Clearing House, 912 Chestnut Street, with last open hours on Monday from 8 to 12 and 1 to 4.
United States Weather Bureau report describes cloudy conditions with little temperature change through Sunday. Forecasts low near 30 tonight and highs in the 30s, with some areas of snow likely in extreme south Sunday and more cloudy conditions across Indiana and Illinois with snow ending by Sunday.
Richard Gess, 16, of 1663 South Avenue, was treated in good condition at Union Hospital after being shot in the right hand while fleeing an off duty officer. Patrolman Don Bingham fired warning shots and then at Gess as he fled in a stolen car. Gess admits stealing several cars and is guarded at the hospital.
Bulletin from Columbus Ohio AP says a New York Central passenger train derailed just north of the city with initial reports of as many as 80 people injured.
Rhodesia suspended petroleum shipments to Zambia in retaliation for Britain's oil embargo on Premier Ian Smith's government. Transport Minister George Rudland said supplies would resume once Rhodesia countered Britain’s action. British officials warned Rhodesia may face rationing and urged reduced travel.
Kohler Co and United Auto Workers ended an 11 year dispute with a $4.5 million package in back pay and pensions. About 1,400 former strikers may receive up to $10,000 each. pension rights are restored for a further $1.5 million. The pact was sealed by a handshake between UAW secretary treasurer Emil Mazey and Kohler vice president Lyman C. Conger.
