Terre Haute school teachers overwhelmingly favored integrating the federal social security program into their retirement fund with 416 votes for and 346 against, while 70 opposed. County totals showed 164 against and 148 in favor, with West Terre Haute showing 15 opposed and 10 in favor as unofficial tallies were sent to Indianapolis for counting.
President Eisenhower undergoes a heart checkup with Dr. Paul Dudley White in Gettysburg as doctors report an "excellent and encouraging" recovery from the heart attack. They advise rest in the South while monitoring progress and plans for a possible second term remain under consideration.
The first degree murder trial of Leslie Irvin enters its second week as the gun he allegedly used to kill Evansville attendant W. Wesley Kerr is admitted as Exhibit 28. Prosecutors say Irvin shot Kerr during a robbery and did not press for his confession on tape.
Mrs Zelma Diel 46 of Terre Haute is in extremely critical condition after turning a shotgun on herself. The act occurred at the Moseman farm a mile southeast of Riley where her father Otis Moseman found the bloodied scene as husband Roy Diel was away at his father’s farm. The couple’s daughter Janetta 19 was at school. This was reportedly the third suicide attempt by the woman and she tested the shotgun prior to firing.
Bennie Hallan aged 24 of New Castle was indicted by a Henry County grand jury on charges of reckless homicide and drunken driving for a December 4 fatality following a December 17 indictment.
Paris December 17 Secretary of State John Foster Dulles planned talks with European unity advocates on an European atomic pool before returning to Washington He will meet with Jean Monnet Paul Henri Spaak Antoine Pinay and Heinrich von Brentano as NATO nations completed a two day meeting to bolster the alliance and deter Soviet pressure.
The Navy disclosed it has awarded five firms contracts to study atomic power for a seaplane giving vast range and speeds over 600 mph. Allison Division GM and Nuclear Development Corp lead the line, with GE Aircraft Gas Turbine and Curtiss-Wright also under Navy contracts via the Air Force, plus Garrett Corp for auxiliary systems.
Donations received yesterday and today for the Tribune Star Basket Fund aid needy families in Terre Haute. Contributions from individuals and groups total $300.25, with a portion previously reported. Gifts should be sent to Tribune Star offices and recipients apply by December 20 through the Family Service Association.

The Booker T. Washington School at 1101 South Thirteenth street was burglarized Friday night for the second time in a week. Police report a north door glass broken to gain entry and the principal’s office ransacked. Detective Huerta Tribble assigned to the case.

Temperatures rise to 60s in Colorado deserts as chinook winds ease cold elsewhere. Cross City reports 24 degrees, Dickinson North Dakota hits 4 below, Minot 5 below, with several areas remaining frigid from Texas to the Great Lakes.
Hoosiers shed ear muffs as a brief warm spell sent temps into the high 30s but a new cold front is forecast for late Sunday. Syracuse news reports Howard Merritt Pierson, 41, a former Texas college student who killed his parents in 1935 and escaped two mental institutions, was captured Friday after visiting a psychiatrist. He surrendered quietly. his father was a Texas Supreme Court justice. The case followed a sensational murder trial and commitment to a state hospital.
United Nations delegates held urgent talks to resolve a deadlock in the Security Council election before the vacant seat on Jan. 1. President Jose Maza's proposed lot-draw plan to pick between the Philippines and Yugoslavia was rejected, and a private accord was sought to end the impasse.

Louise Lensmann an 83 year old resident of a two story duplex died from burns suffered when her clothing caught fire while lighting a coal stove in her kitchen. She lived alone. The incident occurred Friday and she died today in Indianapolis.
