Worker Held After Fatal Elkhart Shooting

In Elkhart Indiana a 25 year old factory worker moved from Salem West Virginia a month ago fatally shot Herbert Singer after a downtown street argument. Robert A Meadows 24 said he unintentionally discharged a .22 during a scuffle. Singer died soon after at General Hospital.

In Salzburg Austria five power station workers bodies recovered raising total dead to 15 from the winter's first avalanche. The avalanche buried workers at a power station site in the Alpine region prompting full rescue efforts.

Neighbors Help Polio Stricken Smith Family in Ojai

In Ojai California Betty and Herb Smith former Spokane residents lie in iron lungs at Ventura County General Hospital since October. Their Nordhoff High School and nursery school teaching roles are supported by a community fund and a March of Dimes grant enabling mortgage payments and care for their two children Debra and Jody. The town raises 2200 from a raffle and 300 from a local high school game. Santa helpers, Christmas tree, and meals sustain the family until discharge and mortgage relief.

Navy Seaplane Bomber Explodes Killing One and Missing Three

In PATUXENT Maryland a prototype Navy jet bomber, the Seamaster, exploded and crashed into Chesapeake Bay killing one crew member and leaving three others missing. The four engine aircraft, claimed to be the world’s first multi jet seaplane, was developed by Glenn L. Martin Co. Divers and a salvage barge searched the 55-foot waters as hopes faded.

Prison Con Held By FBI In Cashier's Death

James P. Taylor a former Terre Haute convict released Oct. 29 was arrested by FBI agents in Joplin Missouri for interstate transportation of stolen travelers checks tied to the kidnapping and murder of Minnesota bank cashier Kenneth Lindbergh. Taylor alias Charles D Kennell faced a Detroit filed complaint under the interstate transportation of stolen property law and allegedly moved over $5 000 in Bank of America checks from Detroit to San Francisco.

Navy Patrol Bomber Crash Off Oahu Rescues Three Men

A two engine Navy patrol bomber crashed at sea during air submarine maneuvers near Oahu. Seven airmen remained missing as two escort destroyers and multiple subs and planes searched the area. Three survivors were rescued by the submarine Bashaw and identified as Lt K C Guedel, Lt (jg) E J O Malley, and Lt (jg) Robert S Smith. the bomber originated from Barbers Point Naval Air Station.

Reports from East Berlin say two American soldiers arrested after a street fight were turned over to Soviet military authorities. Thousands of Christmas packages and cards sent by American troops in Germany were destroyed by fire on Wednesday. Army officials said about one third of the mail in a railway car was burned. The mail had been collected from Army post offices across Germany and was to be loaded onto a ship at Bremerhaven.

The British Navy received word from the freighter Hydralock that two Chinese Nationalist jet fighters attacked the ship Monday off Foochow's mainland coast. The Hydralock reported no casualties though the crew counted 25 bullet holes in the superstructure.

Foreign Minister Heinrich von Brentano may visit Washington early next year to discuss the problem of German unification, according to informed sources. The trip would follow British Prime Minister Anthony Eden’s expected arrival in Washington on January 30.
