Indian mobs in Bombay clash with police after Mon day bloodshed in Portuguese India. Demonstrators burn property near the Portuguese consulate and call for military action. Police fire injuring several. 150000 march for cession of territories as Nehru pledges no military provocation.
Hurricane Diane slowed over the Atlantic near 300 miles east southeast of Charleston and 300 miles from Cape Hatteras with 115 mph winds. Forecasters warned of a possible shift to a northwesterly course toward upper South Carolina or the North Carolina coast tonight or Wednesday morning.
Washington reports Dulles hopeful about a Soviet force reduction as announced to cut 640000 troops by December 15. He warned Russian forces would still exceed U S levels and noted lack of Russian data on sizes and weapons. He urged UN backed inspections and said talks may curb the Korean truce commission activities.
Geneva report says President Eisenhower wants another Atoms for Peace conference to extend international atomic cooperation. Adm. Lewis L. Strauss, chair of the U S Commission, announced the president authorized him to express the hope for continued work, with intervals of two to three years to allow new scientific advances. Strauss noted the president is highly gratified by the 12 day session and that many delegates favor continuing the effort.
Children under 12 admitted free on Children’s Day as Vigo County Fair marks its third day. The Tribune Star hosts the Tournament of Music with bands drum corps baton twirlers from Honey Creek Blackhawk Lyons Spencer Madison Odon Montezuma and Switz City high schools competing for prizes totaling 947 dollars. Sixty six baton twirlers entered the solo contest and more acts anticipated this afternoon.
Today and tomorrow at the fair feature free gate for children until 6 pm with reduced rides. A farm machinery parade and Stars On Parade are scheduled in the evening along with judging events for poultry beef sheep vegetables floriculture goats and dairy. Major highlights include farm equipment demonstrations harness races a beef auction stock parades and live entertainment in the grandstand area.

Schmidt 23 plans to file for divorce from Una Schmidt 21 in Sacramento California and seek custody of their 2 year old son Daniel Jr. His wife reportedly remarried while he served in a Chinese Communist prison and Una’s mother Mrs Walter Ferguson could testify for him aiding his case.

Hammond, Ind. August 16. P. Lewis L. Baldwin 45 assistant vice president of Mercantile National Bank was arrested by FBI agents on a $2200 embezzlement charge in the mortgage and loan department. He was arraigned before a U S commissioner and released on $1000 bond.
The Constellation weather laboratory aircraft from Jacksonville took off for an all night mission to study Hurricane Diane. With 12 crew aboard and $1 million in equipment it used radar to track the storm while other planes performed low level penetrations.
A weather advisory warns of Diane's latest track toward the South Carolina coast late tonight into Wednesday morning. Maximum winds near the center reach hurricane force with tropical storm winds extending outward. Gale force winds cover large arcs around the system, with tides rising six to nine feet above normal.
In Seoul U S Far East Commander Gen Lyman Lemnitzer met with South Korean officials as protests against Communist truce inspectors waned. In Pusan U S military police began removing barbed wire barricades and defenses to show locals the unrest was ending.
Gallagher testifies at his court martial for the death of three prisoners in Korea. The 23 year old Brooklyn man says personal dislike influenced witness Lloyd Pate who testified for the prosecution. He recalls telling Pate to mind his own business and cites Pate’s animosity tied to the death of Cpl. John Williams Jones in a Chinese Red prison camp.
Twelve year old Larry LaTourette was in critical condition after a bicycle accident in Fort Wayne when a broken radio antenna pierced his chest three inches. He pulled the antenna from his heart and was treated at St. Josephs Hospital as surgeons prepared.
Evansville Indiana reports the death of eight year old Danny Ray Shoptaugh after his bicycle was hit by a car at an intersection. The fatal injuries occurred today and the incident is under local investigation.
