Death by self in Sullivan Jail after DWI arrest

Michael Kuci 62 of Jackson Hill hanged himself with a belt in the Sullivan County jail early Sunday after a Saturday arrest for driving while intoxicated on U. S. 41 near Mary Sherman Hospital. Two Youths Arrested for Check Fraud in Seneca County

Chief of Detectives Willard Gantz announced that Gene Allen Carrick 18 of Caruthers and Louis Thomas Brown 21 of Bloomville admitted passing worthless checks. They were arrested by Police Officers Melvin Cardinal and Martin and will be turned over to Ohio authorities. Brown is also wanted for passing fraudulent checks after escaping from an officer in Tiffany.

Circle Strikers Overturn Cars In New Riot

About 100 to 150 strikers and sympathizers rushed Perfect Circle's New Castle foundry, overturning four cars after a bus was stoned outside. One officer and several workers injured, nine arrested on contempt charges. Union figures and company officials clash over injunctions and wages.

Sullivan Youths Honored for Saving Livestock

Keith Deckard and Carolyn Deckard of Sullivan Indiana were cited by the American Veterinary Medical Association for saving 100 sheep and 6 pigs from a barn fire and sprinkling another building with a garden hose until fire crews arrived. Crowds Pack Vigo County Fair Opener

Vigo County Fair opened for an eight day run with heavy Sunday attendance. Judges awarded about 1,500 prizes since judging began Friday including 4-H and women’s department exhibits. Tonight Jose Chitwood and his auto daredevils perform, and the 4-H Club Chorus appears at the grandstand. Tuesday is Children’s Day with free admission for under 12 and a children’s western horse show at 10 in front of the horse barn.

Indiana Traffic Deaths Rise In Rural Roads In First Half 1955

Indiana state police report 389 people died on rural roads and highways in the first six months of 1955, up 11 from 378 in the same period of 1954, while urban street deaths fell from 109 to 108. The six month statewide total rose to 497 from 487, with August 7 totals showing 601 for 1955 and 604 for 1954.

Patricia McClellan Arthur an 18 year old from Cayuga Ind is held in Juarez jail charged with the fatal shooting of Albert J Arreola a 24 year old El Paso police officer. She says the shooting was an accident. An early trial is expected though local political shakeups may cause a delay.

Boy 15 Survives Half Mile in Water Pipe

A 15 year old boy from Torrance California survived a half mile swept through a 36 inch underground pipe after swimming near a flood control dam. Accompanied youths directed rescuers to the spillway outfall where picnickers revived him with artificial respiration.

Broadway star George Tyne refused to answer House Un American Activities questions about Communist Party membership. He said he would not invoke the Fifth Amendment and warned he could face contempt citations. The subcommittee opened three days of hearings with 27 witnesses called.

Giant aluminum plants announced for Montana and Indiana

Anaconda Aluminum Co opens a 65 million dollar primary aluminum plant at Columbia Falls Montana and announces a 25 million dollar American Brass Company aluminum mill to be built in Terre Haute Indiana. The Terre Haute site will begin soil tests in July with operations planned for late 1956 and capacity targets of 120 million pounds per year by 1956. About 450 workers will be employed at full production. Ongoing output will include ingots billets sheet and strip extrusion of tubes rods and shapes. Raw material is 120000 tons of Jamaica mined alumina per year.

Rioting Convicts at Washington Prison Surrender and Release Hostages

Walla Walla Washington August 15 twelve rioting convicts surrendered and released ten hostages after Warden Lawrence Delmore Jr backed by armed guards threatened them. The inmates initially seized 11 guards at 10 15 p m during dinner and freed one, Gerald Lehan, with demands. Guards used tear gas and a warning shot to retake control and soon secured cells across the prison while three guards were briefly held in a cell. Continued on page 2 column 2.

Therp Miller Brothers Face Federal Drug Charges

Terre Haute druggists Thurman and Fred Miller were freed on $3,000 bond in Indianapolis after being charged with refilling prescriptions in 1953 and 1954 without physicians' permission. The Miller brothers operate the Miller Drug Store at 412 Wabash Avenue and live at 1928 North Thirteenth Street.
