A Jacksonville letter reports a family near Alligator, Florida starving as the father dies at home. The mother, seeking food with a gun, disappears for three days returning to find him dead. The eldest son later dies at a neighbor’s while seeking aid. soon after, the wife and younger son are found dead, all perishing from starvation.
A royal ordinance promotes Prince de Joinville to Rear Admiral and records his marriage to the Brazilian princess. Dowry totals include 1,000,000 francs in specie, 180,000 francs annual revenue, 25 leagues of Santa Catarina territory, 26,000 francs income, 200,000 francs in jewels, and a 900,000 franc gift from the Brazilian Emperor. The princess would inherit Brazil if the Emperor and hereditary heir die without issue, and a Brest letter describes the Princess as young, graceful, with chestnut hair and elegant figure.
A whitish slate stone easily cut into slender cylinders has been found at Castleton Vermont. The quarry is owned by Mr Cain and is believed to be the only one in the United States. The pencils produce a white, more distinct mark than ordinary slate pencils.
