The Tarborough Press lists weekly publication with annual prepaid price of ten dollars and fifty cents, or three years at expiration. Short advertisements up to a square cost one dollar for the first insertion, twenty five cents per month for less than a year, and longer notices at the same square rate. Court orders and judicial ads add twenty five percent. Letters to the editor must be postpaid.
A reflective verse ponders death in a somber grave as a quiet resting place. It contrasts the holy and learned with the weary seeker whose ambition wanes. The speaker imagines the grave as a hiding place for those who long for solitude and escape from a world that has forsaken them.
In a July 28 1843 reply Calhoun challenges the National Intelligencer and Gales Seaton over the title Suppressed Speeches of Mr Calhoun He argues the title is false and the selection period chosen from Monroes presidency to 1839 reflects his mature opinions He defends his method and explains why earlier works were omitted while insisting no suppression occurred.

The Florida Herald reports rapid permit uptake at St Augustine and Newnanville with 217 by the 14th and near 700 from Newnanville, plus about 100 pending. Add in daily increases, suggesting 800 to 1,000 permits total and a full 200,000 acres likely claimed. A permanent East Florida population rise of over six thousand is projected before year end.
Philadelphia Chronicles reports William G. Knight a London Bar member who forged bills of exchange totalling 827 000 in 1841 fled to Scotland and then to the United States. Ninety one forged notes are in the country as Knight faces public scrutiny for one of the era’s most adroit swindles. Also notes a Seminole preacher in Reading, nephew of Osceola, planning to return to his mission work.
New York press describes a monument to Washington to rise in the city. The lookout will be 400 feet from the base, with total height 425 feet. Estimated cost not to exceed 400000 dollars, to be raised by funds yet unspecified.
An official letter details a dawn clash between several hundred Sioux and Pawnee Loups at the Pawnee village. About 300 horses were taken. Pawnees report numerous deaths and claim 46 Sioux killed. Pawnees recount heavy losses from scalping attempts, and a planned council to bolster defense with potential new military posts.
In Swank v Zimmerman the Supreme Court verdict awarded Maria Swank $4000 in slander damages after a two hour jury deliberation. The Common Pleas award was $5000, appealed by Zimmerman. The plaintiff is about 15, the defendant a wealthy Hocking County resident. The plaintiff remitted $2000 of the amount in the bill. The case is described as the most extraordinary exemplary damages for defamation in Northwestern Ohio.
From the Advertiser report, on Monday last at Swan Island Maine, Francis Perkins Jr. of this city was instantly killed by an accidental gun discharge while boarding a boat. He was a promising youth, and his premature death is deeply lamented.
