Lobo Ranch Road Declared Private by Judge Harris

District Judge Jay G. Harris ruled the Lobo Ranch Road is not a public road, in a case over whether the historic thoroughfare between Arroyo Hondo and San Cristobal should remain open. The decision questions evidence backing the Healys claim while noting Turley Mill Road was historically used.

Fire destroys church and art at Taos site

A blaze on State Road 240 south of Taos destroyed the Church of the Creative Spirit and about 100000 dollars of art and antiques owned by painter Charles Collins. Pastor Sandra Kovacs described a total loss of the devotional space while Collins reported about 10000 dollars in antiques and handcrafted skylights lost. Fire units arrived at 4 16 a m and had the fire under control by 6 a m with the east end engulfed. investigators may pursue arson and will seek outside help from the state fire marshal and insurer.

County told to increase property taxes

Taos County officials warned residents that the state DFA ordered a higher tax rate after many protests against assessed values. Tax assessor Margie Abeyta and chief appraiser Gerald Nichols said the rate must rise due to projected revenue losses from protests, a move they cannot block.
