Six names circulate for the Taos Mora Santa Fe North seat as Sen Francisco Gonzales seeks a second term. Democratic possibles include Fernando Valdez and Larry Hoover with Rudy Fernandez and Fermin Pacheco named as possibles. Republicans floated Ken Blair Celestino Romero and Gabriel Chavez. Governor Anaya backed Gonzales after a June fundraiser.

Bodies of Wolfgang Pogzeba his wife Wen-An and infant Jason and attorney Pat Harrison were recovered from a spruce forest on Canjilon Mountain after the plane vanished November 2. The 46 year old Taos artist in flight from Helena to Taos radioed Durango then disappeared near Dulce. A funeral for Pogzeba takes place in Santa Fe.
Susan Ross files two quo warranto requests with state officers to challenge Los Tres Valles Special Zoning District in Taos County. Both the district attorney and attorney general denied aid citing conflicts and internal advisories. Ross may pursue private action. client remains unidentified.
Taos forecasters and residents weigh a soggy season with 7.14 inches of rain, 1983’s record rains below and a cool trend at Taos Ski Valley. Local observers like Ernie Blake and Bob Rheinhold note unusually wet, cool conditions while predictions mix dry and snowy outlooks for winter.
A black cloud 150 feet high rose over the town dump near Taos Municipal Airport on August 24 as vandals set a brush fire and piled tires atop it. Town crews dirtied and smothered the smouldering pile to extinguish the blaze, per public works director Wilfred Gallegos.
Martinez, former superintendent of schools, temporarily fills the county finance officer post after Samuel Montoya leaves for the governor's aide job. County administrator Tom Trujillo says the position will be advertised with normal procedures, paying $17,072 annually or $8.64 hourly until filled. Martinez was previously an insurance agent.
At an August meeting, school bus drivers said motorists repeatedly ignore flashing red lights, endangering students. They will again note license numbers and hand them to State Police. State law requires a complete stop on both sides of the road when bus red lights flash, regardless of direction.
A UNM committee studying the D H Lawrence Ranch near San Cristobal added a fifth proposal to a report for regents. The plan suggests keeping the ranch open at an annual cost of about $20,000, amid pressure from the university community. The ranch was to close effective November 1.
