Layoffs Loom at Molycorp Mine in Questa After Price Drop
Molycorp, a Unocal subsidiary, told workers at the Questa molybdenum mine on Oct 21 that a steep price collapse from over 4 to 2.32 dollars per pound in recent months will force layoffs by January. Most contract staff and many full time workers will be cut, reducing 350 employees to just over 100. Shoemaker said production will continue at a slower pace and new veins will be developed. The drop is tied to Asian market recession. A final layoff list will be ready in a couple weeks.

Second Zough killer pleads guilty in slaying
Twenty one year old Viento Herrera pleaded guilty in district court to second degree murder for his role in the 1997 killing of Stephen Zough. Herrera, from Arroyo Hondo, is the second of three co defendants to accept a plea bargain. Prosecutors said the deal leaves two killers convicted of murder while other charges include tampering with evidence.
