Ranchos men sentenced in rape case in Taos area
Two Ranchos de Taos men, Orlando Brito and Juan Velarde, 22, were sentenced to 2 to 10 years in the State Penitentiary after pleading guilty to criminal sexual penetration and related charges in the November 1977 rape of a Taos Pueblo woman. A 60 day diagnostic was ordered first, with evaluation recommending return to prison. Adolfo Suazo, 18, pleaded guilty to assault with intent to kill in a separate incident.

The grand jury returned four indictments last week. Donovan Christian of Taos faces involuntary manslaughter in an August 29 baby death. Mark C. Griffin of Canon is charged with involuntary manslaughter in September 18 deaths of Gloria Maestas and her daughter Maria. Anthony Pat Abeyta of Ranchos de Taos is charged with auto theft and burglary for a August 10 Texaco theft. Felix Rodarte faces one count of aggravated battery for an alleged September 14 attack on Arnold Mascarenas with a deadly weapon.
