Donut driver pleads guilty on eve of trial in Taos court
John Abeyta Jr., 33, of Chamisal, pleaded guilty Tuesday to eight counts in District Court after rejecting a plea that would have downgraded a fourth-degree felony and a misdemeanor. The case stems from a June 2004 indictment for aggravated DWI and battery on a peace officer after an incident in Chamisal where he allegedly donuts in his car. He faces up to 8.5 years in prison and sentencing awaits. Judge Peggy Nelson presided with A.D.A. Lee Boothby and public defender Raymond Meza.

Red River boy killed in crash linked to alcohol
A seven year old Red River boy, Nolan Prichard, died Sunday after a two rolling vehicle crash at 5:30 p m. His father Christopher Prichard drove a 1966 Jeep. Nolan was secured with a lap belt. Investigators consider alcohol, speed, and reckless driving as possible factors. Blood alcohol testing is pending.
