Lama Fire Rages North Of Taos In 10000 Acre Spread
The Lama community north of Taos faced its worst fire loss as a garbage blaze grew to about 10,000 acres, burning 27 homes including 15 of 20 at Lama Foundation. Evacuations affected Questa Red River and San Cristobal as 400 firefighters fought shifting winds and rugged terrain. Governor Johnson declared a state of emergency and $750,000 in state funds were released for suppression and relief while disaster status pursued federal aid and individual grants.
