El Valle seeks time to secure water rights in Taos area

El Valle de Los Ranchos Water and Sanitation District seeks a May 19 CAC decision to gain time to obtain water rights for a domestic system serving Talos Ranchos de Taosares. Without rights, about 200000 dollars in funding could be pulled. The district requests 21000 dollars for engineering and permission to continue negotiations with Talpa Water Association and the Town of Taos for rights. The Talpa proposal, if leased, would charge 14 dollars yearly for a system including storage and hydrants, with El Valle maintaining control and debt borne by El Valle. Talpa previously declined, and Ranchos Water sought CAC funds through Taos County, a move now blocked by El Valle’s plan. District administrator Pete Suazo aims for Rio Chama water from Taos and to lease Talpa rights. board member Nancy Gonzales notes Suazo must secure rights for all subscribers, including Talpa, for funding. Suazo will address the CAC in May.
