Former Taos police officer Joel Cordova of El Prado faces 44 charges in a grand jury indictment by the state Attorney General’s Office. The counts span 1996 to 1999 with nine of the first counts tied to a victim under 13. Arraignment set for March 4. potential maximum sentence about 408 years.
Taos County commissioners declare a countywide state of emergency due to heavy snow rain and runoff. They seek about 5.5 million dollars in emergency relief to repair severely damaged roads and surface problems, with Gov. Richardson approval required for funding.
Taos County jury found Paul Lopez not guilty on three charges from a July 3 2001 shootout on Pacheco Road Llano de San Juan. Jurors signed and requested admission of a letter to the case file, and Judge Peggy Nelson granted the request. An ensuing shootout incident led to two arrests and an attempted murder charge.
Taos Ski Valley announces a one week extension to April 10 due to over 220 inches of snowfall this season. Marketing manager Adriana Blake notes the mountain will stay open as conditions permit with all tickets priced at 30 dollars from April 4 to closing day.
Dominic Martinez announced his run for Taos County Sheriff in the 2006 election. A 35 year old law enforcer, he has eight years as an investigator with the Eighth Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Yaus, plus prior stints with Questa and Taos police departments. Martinez says he is the most experienced and qualified officer for the job and felt compelled to run.
Taos County Commissioners scheduled a March 11 discussion on renewing County Manager Sanuny Pacheco's employment. Pacheco said he has worked under both contracted and open terms and believes the county is moving forward under his stewardship despite uncertainty and potential dissatisfaction. The meeting will be held in the commission chambers on Albright.
