Taos Schools settle zoning clash over attendance

An OCR desegregation review urged Taos Municipal Schools to enforce zoning to end preferential treatment for Anglo students from outlying areas. For example Taos Ski Valley students may bypass Arroyo Seco Elementary to attend Taos Elementary, causing hour bus delays. The board had tied 3-3 before, and approved zoning under an Emergency School Aid Act plan to meet OCR needs before the 1978 79 year.

Medina to Stand Trial in Taos Kidnapping Case

Clarence Medina 25 of Ranchos de Taos is set to stand trial in District Court in Taos on March 6 for kidnapping and aggravated battery in the Aug 23 1977 non fatal shooting of legal secretary Katie Valerio. Judge John B Wright rejected a bid to quash the indictment and denied severing the charges amid a grand juror related to both victim and defendant.

New Mexico Ski Areas Report $900000 January Lift Revenue

Ski New Mexico Inc reports two large New Mexico ski areas earned $900,000 from lift tickets in January with total state impact near $4.95 million. The DOD board heard on February 16 that the industry supports over $350,000 in winter sports promotion for 1976-77.

Questa annexes acreage to Village of Questa

The Questa Village Council approved a 235 acre annexation Friday February 24. The land lies north and east of current boundaries with interested landowners hoping to join a future municipal sewage system. The ordinance and plat go to the Taos County Clerk. Dissenters have 30 days to protest in District Court. if none filed, annexation becomes effective.
