Birth of the Atomic Age in New Mexico history
The July New Mexico Magazine Vacation Issue recounts the birth of the atomic era from July 16, 1945, when the Alamogordo test shook the desert and the two billion dollar project pushed toward surrender of Japan. It traces the DOE’s early New Mexico sites from Los Alamos to Sandia Base and Kirtland, then White Sands and later research installations after Alamogordo and Sunspot, amid the explosion’s Sacramento Mountains backdrop.
