Philmont opens 38th season with scouts gathering
More than 350 scouts arrived in Cimarron to start Philmont Scout Ranch 38th season. The 214-square mile site expects about 15,000 Scouts and Explorers over a 10 week program featuring 21 mountain camps and daily 10 day treks led by 487 staffers. Philmont began in 1938 after Waite Phillips donated land along the Santa Fe Trail to the Boy Scouts of America.

Ninth Annual Rodeo de Taos weekend parade and events
The Ninth Annual Rodeo de Taos runs this weekend with a downtown parade at 10 a.m. Saturday featuring celebrities such as former Gov. Bruce King and Taos officials. The rodeo opens at 1:30 p.m. Saturday with events including bareback bronc, calf roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing, followed by a large Western Dance. Sunday continues with finals in all events starting at 1:30 p.m. A food and liquor stand operates daily from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Muzzle loader rendezvous set for Santa Fe Trail event
The NRA and American Mountain Men host the second Santa Fe Trail Rendezvous at NRA Outdoor Conn near Raton this weekend June 25. Three days of muzzle loading shooting, trading fairs, tomahawk and knife events, races, and other period activities revive the 1820s 1830s spectacle. Public welcome with a $5 participant fee. Governors from New Mexico Colorado Utah Arizona Texas invited. Lt. Gov. Robert Ferguson will attend for New Mexico. memorial stones to be added at the trail marker. Coordinators are A. Lee Robertson and Ladd Gordon. NRA Center features a teepee village and RV parking with limited water.
