Wildlife depredations rise as drought hits New Mexico
Department of Game and Fish notes antelope, deer, elk and bears encroaching on private land across the state. Water and irrigated fields drive the conflicts. fencing is costly and largely rejected by the state. In Ocate and near Mayhill, elk and other wildlife persist despite depredation permits and nocturnal visits.
