Wild Trout Stock Efforts In Wheeler Peak Area NM
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish stocks Wheeler Peak Wilderness lakes by helicopter every few years with native cutthroat fry. Middle Fork Lake and the Rio Hondo near Taos Ski Valley receive rainbow trout in early July. Rio Hondo above Taos and Sawmill Creek host natural cutthroat populations. East Fork Red River also stocked with rainbows. Williams Lake reportedly has no fish due to near solid winter freezes. For more information contact NM Game and Fish in Raton, 505-445-231.
