Taos Elementary School principal Albert Ortega pushes a classroom placement proposal giving parents up to three preferred teachers for their child. The plan, debated by the Taos School Board, would affect the 1999-2000 year with seven teachers per grade level and final classroom assignments in August.
Kit Carson Electrical Cooperative trustees approved a rate reduction on May 25. The change awaits approval from the Public Regulation Commission. General manager Luis Reyes says the coop aims to cover expenses and return excess to members, with further decreases expected within six months. The current average rate falls from about 10.9 to 10 cents per kilowatt hour, a first drop since at least 1978.
Thousands of riders packed Red River for the Memorial Day Run as Harleys, Enduros, and Ducati cafe racers filled the scene. Levi Ortiz and his 11-year-old son Corey joined the rally amid threatened skies, but rain held off after nightfall and vendors offered knives, leather goods, and barbecue along the outdoor aisles.
The Red River Memorial Day Rally attracted about 6,000 bikers with 11 drunken driving arrests by the New Mexico State Police, none to riders. Red River Marshal Ken Iskow noted overall success, with extra help from Farmington and Rio Rancho and praise from bars and locals for law enforcement efforts.
In the early 1980s the parish marked its 160th anniversary and Father Ed Savilla notes the role of traditions. He aimed to blend Taos culture into liturgy through processions music and Panitentes elements, making worship more inclusive while preserving Catholic rites.
Taos County Sheriff Charlie Martinez says Taos Central Dispatch under delivers for his office citing poor input in hiring, phone coverage policy for Taos Police, and radio repeater problems in remote areas. County commissioners tabled a $151,244 funding decision until further discussion.
