Taos bans fireworks as sales raise funds halted
Taos town and Taos County ban possession and use of fireworks while sales by Taos Valley School and Taos High School wrestlers raised funds. Farr's Smith's and Wal-Mart voluntarily pulled fireworks June 25 to 29 with town manager Gus Cordova praising the civic response as the state decides if sales can be barred.

Plague Found In Taos Woman Shows Third NM Case
Health officials confirm plague bacteria in the bloodstream of a 40 year old Taos County woman last week. She is recovering and was treated at Holy Cross Hospital then at the Indian Health Service clinic in Santa Fe. It is believed exposure came from infected rodents or fleas. The diagnosis was confirmed by the New Mexico Department of Health Scientific Laboratory Division.

Block slides into PRC nomination with four votes
Jerome Block clinched the Democratic nomination for District 3 on the Public Regulatory Commission by a razor thin four vote margin after late Rio Arriba County ballots were tallied. Liz Stefanics led on election night but Block's final tally rose to 16,638 to Stefanics 16,634 per the Bureau of Elections. Stefanics seeks a recount with a deadline of July 9. Block faces Green Party candidate Cliff Bain in November with no Republican candidate.

Second Fire Rips Through Angel Fire Arson Suspected
Firefighters contained two blazes west of Angel Fire with arson suspected after the Osha Canyon Fire prompted evacuations of 100 residents from June 21. The fire burned 132 acres, 54 in Angel Fire Country Club Resort and 49 in Carson National Forest. evacuees returned June 24. A second blaze, the Zia Fire, burned 65 acres near the Osha burn and was controlled by June 29. Mayor Barbara Cottam praised the response.
