Rio Grande Air, canceled flights last week, has a financing proposal under discussion. Officials say the discussions cover potential funding and restructuring steps to resume service while financial concerns are addressed.
Carson National Forest issues Stage II fire restrictions with no campfires or smoking outside vehicles and buildings, no fireworks or chainsaws, and spark arresters required for engines. Fire danger rated very high to extreme. lightning accounted for most incidents. Obituaries list multiple deaths with dates in June, including Aguilar, Bryce, Cordova, Herrera, Jeantete, Nex, Pasternack, Sudarshan, Vigil, and others.

Richard Sabirio Frésquez already serving life plus six for murder was sentenced to 27 additional years Friday after pleading guilty to three counts of criminal sexual penetration and one count of aggravated burglary in district court. Defense sought concurrent terms, but the court imposed the new sentence.
Sadie Boyer selected from three finalists by county commissioners to replace Jesus Gonzalez who resigned June 1 after being declared incompetent. Boyer, former educator and planning examiner, emphasized service orientation and family ties to local justice history. Parties plan separate July meetings to nominate candidates for the November 2004 ballot. Her son is a New Mexico State Police officer. another son is deceased.
In Taos District Court Judge Michael Vigil sentenced Earl Romo as an adult for the March 10 2003 murder of Albert Trujillo. Romo pleaded no contest to first degree murder and received 28 years with 15 to be served, amid remarks on violence in the county and alcohol factors. The judge criticized the beer supplier and blamed adults in the party for the tragedy.
On July 4 2003 a lightning strike sparked the Encebado Fire near Taos Pueblo triggering a rapid blaze. Fire crews faced intense flames as residents reported a large smoke plume and events including fireworks were canceled. Local authorities coordinated responses while Taos Pueblo Forestry Office tried to contain the fire.
