Taos and El Valle seek sewer funding and expansion

El Valle Sanitation District president Del Torres and Taos Mayor Phil Lovato signed a joint request for sewer funding on Tuesday. EPA review within about a month will determine approval, with UDAG funds expected to expand the plant to treat 1.4 million gallons daily if possible. The district studies and regional cooperation efforts aim to deliver improved service at lower costs for residents.

Spanish King May Visit Taos Area During February

Spanish king Juan Carlos could travel to Taos area on one of February days while his Santa Fe stop is set for February 12 to 14. Janet Wise of Gov. Bruce King’s office noted the Taos visit remains a possibility.

Town administrator Carlos Miranda resumes duties at Town Hall after an appendicitis illness just after Christmas. He reports feeling fine but tires easily and plans a full schedule with occasional short breaks this week starting Monday January 6.

Drivers Ed Returns at Taos High School

Taos High School will revive its drivers education program next semester under THS principal Herman Quintana. Harper Motor Co will supply a vehicle. the school owns braking equipment signs and aids. Successful students gain reduced insurance rates and may apply for a New Mexico license at age fifteen. A teacher will be hired and applications are being reviewed. Course begins January 5.

Citizens propose reforms to justice and restitution

Two citizen groups led by Citizens for Prison Change and the Presbytery Task Force on Criminal Justice study the state system since February riots. They push bills from the Corrections Department, focusing on restitution over retribution, community corrections, prison work programs, diversion, parole, and better in-prison services. Donna Lobb will speak to the Women’s Chamber of Commerce about lobbying efforts.

Lawsuit Over Gaspard House Continues to Block Transfer

Hearing set for Friday to show cause why Gaspard House and furnishings must be turned over to R. Koman with Blackman moving out. District Judge Caldwell ordered restraint on tampering and inventory to proceed, while Blackman counters a Dec 30 claim seeking rescission of contracts. He alleges illness when signing and accuses Koman of taking possession of mortgaged properties valued at 750000 with a $75000 note forgiven.

Taos seeks 400000 HUD grant for water and sewer lines

Taos Town Council approved a $400,000 request to the federal Housing and Urban Development agency for sewer and water line projects. If approved in three months, funds would primarily lay new sewer lines to Cruz Altes Casitas and install water lines on Placitas and Mana Teneres Streets, with other areas considered.
