After six years as county commissioner Gabriel Romero became chair of the five member body with no fireworks as observers had expected. He noted that Nick Jaramillo had stated during the election season that he would relinquish the post if someone else wanted it. The new year began with routine business, a request to move agenda items to the front, and calls for civility. Manny Pacheco said his goal is to be a better, more positive commissioner. Emanuel Pacheco referenced rotation and hint of positive changes, while Don Francisco Trujillo Jr. was elected vice chairman.
Taos residents faced slick streets on Wednesday January 5 as the first major snowstorm of 2005 dropped 5.5 inches in the Tos News lot. Red River Pass Snotel reported about 24 inches, up from 17.8 inches a day earlier, while Taos Ski Valley noted 15 inches of new snow.
The National Weather Service notes January patterns are hard to predict though region should stay wetter with notable snowfall through the month. A 28 inch weekly total was reported, with Taos Ski Valley showing a 61 to 66 inch base midweek. Forecasters expect another storm Friday into Saturday with snow chances and cold highs near 13.
After 19 years as Taos Town Manager, Gus Cérdova reflects on achievements and regrets before becoming executive director of the New Mexico Association of Counties. He relocates to Santa Fe but keeps his Taos home, noting a budget over $35 million and cash reserves above $7 million.
Charlene Tsoodle Marcus, jailed on paid leave since July 15 after inmate fund thefts at the 72‑hour holding facility, attended an Albuquerque hearing led by Maureen Sanders. The county’s HR director notified her of a proposed demotion to Deputy Juvenile Detention Director, a move costing about $10,000 annually.
A crash on State Road 38 between Questa and Red River Thursday afternoon injured six people who were taken to area hospitals. Names and conditions were not available at press time. The rest of the weekend saw few incidents aside from fireworks. a court district checkpoint on Paseo del Pueblo Sur yielded one DWI arrest. Governor Richardson reported no DWI fatalities statewide over the weekend.
