The Snake family of Picuris Pueblo lost their home to a Monday fire after stepping out for a drive during a power outage. They returned about 6:15 p.m. to flames, with Lorraine Snake noting that opening the door fed the fire. The blaze left the residence completely burned with their Christmas tree still upright.
In their final regular meeting, Taos County commissioners approved planning task forces and a resolution urging incoming members to preserve the grass-roots planning approach. They backed lawsuits to enforce compliance with Taos County Land Subdivision Regulations as outgoing members Celestino Romero and Sofia Ortega prepare to depart. A special meeting on Wednesday was set to approve minutes for the new commission.

The project seeks input on unique qualities to preserve.
Taos Police Chief Neil Curran survived a self inflicted thigh wound six days after an accidental restroom incident at Taos police headquarters. The department chose not to replace their Glock 40 handgun. Taos County filed three lawsuits Feb 27 against alleged illegal land subdivisions as part of a year long growth push. The Taos Tigers finished state runners up after losing to Socorro at The Pit in Albuquerque. A site near Chamisa Verde housing project was chosen for a new youth and family center, with opening planned in 1999.
Tom Udall moves from New Mexico to Washington to serve as a freshman congressman. He will occupy office 502 in the Cannon House Office Building, leaving January 2 by train to begin duties with the 106th Congress sworn in January 6.
