The Taos Town Council on December 19 approved a long term lease governing the right of way of streets and alleys in the central business district with Taos Pueblo. The agreement costs the town and New Mexico $1.45 million and ends a long running dispute over use of Pueblo owned streets. Mayors and leaders signed the permanent easement as a ceremonial check for 350 000 dollars was exchanged.
The Taos News notes that municipal, county, state, and federal offices as well as many banks and grocers will close on Christmas Day. Some Pueblo offices may stay open to visitors, while stores such as Amigos Food Coop Farrs and Smiths set specific hours on Christmas Eve. Allsups remains open for last minute shopping, and the paper also mentions a deadline shift to 2 p.m.
Taos Pueblo officials sign to become a cooperating agency in the environmental impact statement for Taos airport expansion. The 11 million project includes an 8600 foot crosswind runway, lighting, taxiways, new terminal, and access road, with Mechem ruling EIS required since 1991.
