County commissioners praise Better Informed Officials Conference
Three of five incoming Taos County commissioners attended the Better Informed Public Officials Conference in Rio Rancho. Emanuel Pacheco said the three day event offered ethics, parliamentary procedure, contracts, networking, and media relations sessions. Nicklas Jaramillo and Gabriel Romero also called the conference informative and useful for long range planning and understanding county government. About 150 to 200 attendees were present, with most Taos representatives staying two and a half days.

Northern Rio Grande Heritage Area Act Fails in Senate
The proposed act would have named Taos, Rio Arriba, and Santa Fe counties as a National Heritage Area with federal funds to boost tourism. It envisioned a nonprofit board of 10 to 25 members from state, counties, tribes, and cities to develop a management plan. Support came from Espafiala and Santa Fe, local counties, and regional groups, joining a few Western heritage areas already in Arizona and Colorado.

Mixed reception at Ojo Caliente landfill information meeting
Residents nearly evenly split over a regional landfill five miles south of Ojo Caliente. The proposal, led by North Central Solid Waste Authority, would process 90 tons daily for 40,800 residents across four communities, with a 100 year plan and environmental safeguards amid land grant concerns. Public comment runs to Sept 2003 with a final decision due June 2004.
