Second Annual History Essay Contest Slated

The Taos County Historical Society sponsors the second annual historical essay contest with a deadline of April 1, 1966. Open to Taos District Catholic and public high and junior high students, prizes total four seven fifty awards split between Spanish and English entries, with a suggested topic focusing on figures who colonized or developed New Mexico between 1624 and 1860. Fabio Romero of Arroyo Seco Taos High School was a 1965 winner.

Penney's Staff Receives Bonus

Associates at the J C Penney Company department store have received a special Christmas payment for those employed on or before December 1964, excluding management. The payment complements sick benefits medical insurance non-contributory group life insurance pension profit sharing retirement plans and purchase discounts offered to Penney associates.

The building committee favors a new headquarters at a different location to curb chronic space shortages. Moynihan urges returning to the core issue of the cooperative’s growth and ability to serve, while noting a misreading of an REA loan request and a two year forecast estimating 250000 dollars needed, not 400000.

Taos Schools Face Split High Plan With Mid-High Proposal

Taos public schools consider two two-year high schools due to crowding and funding limits. Superintendent Joe Otero says a mid-high ninth and tenth grade program at the old plant could allow a senior high for juniors and seniors at a new South Santa Fe Road site with about $750,000. Bids open Feb 18. architect is Zia Engineering Co. Plans to be ready by Jan 15. options include classroom building, with music or gym facilities as cost permits.

New County Road Grader Used on Private Roadway

A county grader valued at 33 780 was reportedly borrowed to grade a private and a public road. Louis Martinez says he lent the machine to Fe lipe Ortega, District 2 commissioner, to help with area road work. Grader operator Juan L. Baca reports the machine was tampered with after returning to Cerro. Martinez threatens charges if the private road owner complains.

Loss of Logging Payroll Endangers Taos County Jobs

A looming loss of an $800,000 EDA loan threatens 57 workers at Taos County’s Bostian Mill and Aspen Wood Products in Domingo. Without loan approval, the Domingo plant may close, impacting Aspen lumber supply and regional jobs as senators are pressed to clear processing snags. The RCC also discussed water conservation and range-improvement funding.

Christmas Trees Available For Taos Forest

Public invited to cut Christmas trees in Carson National Forest 15 miles south of Taos between Pot Creek and U. S. Hill. Permits sold at site for $1. Cutting hours are 9 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. on December 11 12 18 and 19. Bring axe or saw and rope to secure tree, wear warm clothing, and note light snow. Officials offer boughs arrangements at the site or District Ranger's office on North Pueblo Road.

Funeral for Fla vio E. Arellano at Our Lady of Sorrows

Funeral services for Flavio E Arellano age 19 of Leadville Colorado were held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church Arroyo Hondo on November 29 following a dynamite blast at Center Colorado on November 25. Rev Rafael Herrera officiated and burial followed in Arroyo Hondo Cemetery. Survivors include sisters Cordy Wuhan Center Colorado Viola Silva Lupita Vigil Bennie Arellano Adolita Arellano Arroyo Hondo brothers Manuel Domacio Center Vidal Monte Vista Horatio Orlando Arroyo Hondo Arroyo Seco grandmother Mrs Juanita Vigil Arroyo Hondo and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Willie Trumpette Raymond Vigil Lloyd Martinez Fernando Martinez Gilbert Sanchez and Adelmo Vigil. Rosary occurred at Hanlon Funeral Home on the night of November 28.
