Ground breaking for Phil Lovato Senior Center in Albuquerque

Speakers hailed the Phil Lovato Senior Citizens Center as the answer to prayers and a dream becoming reality at the Aug 22 ceremony behind the Ramada Inn. Gerald Martin Construction Co. won the bid at 440000, aiming for a Feb 7 completion. Mayor Santistevan hoped the date would also mark his birthday present.

St Francis School to Have Golden Mass

St Francis School in Taos marks 50 years with a Sept 5 Mass and reception led by Archbishop Robert Sanchez. The school opens Sept 2 for 110 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, led by Principal Sister Grace and staff Sisters Annette Rosina and Nancy.

Holy Cross Hospital trims staff amid cost cuts and price hikes

Brim and Associates cut about 10 percent of Holy Cross Hospital staff, raise rates 5.6 percent, renegotiate five service contracts, and launch a public survey on upcoming services. Interim leadership named, nurse morale described as okay, with severance and extended insurance for laid workers.

Labor Day Office Closures and Taos News Schedule

Town county and U S government offices will be closed Monday for Labor Day. The Taos News will open Monday for ads and weekend news but close Friday Sept 5 for the holiday. Postal patrons may pick up mail Monday but windows are closed.

Eighth Taos signal planned at SR 68 U S 64 intersection

Taos will add an eighth traffic signal this mid September as the Highway Department installs a stop light and turn signals at the Rator Bypass intersection of SR 68 and U S 64. Officials cited an April 1985 study showing disruption from turns and noted state standards require signals when traffic exceeds thresholds on major and minor roads.

Japanese exchange student robbed in New England area

Eiji Inoue arrived from Yokohama on August 18 as a high school exchange student and two days later was robbed of a tote bag containing money, a camera, an address book, and a Japanese dictionary from host Fabi Romero’s car. The loss, especially the address book with friends’ addresses, prevents contacting his girlfriend in Minnesota. Call Romero at 776-8120 or 758-1643 or contact state or town police.
