At a Friday meeting superintendent Quintana pressed the Questa board to name their concerns about his performance. He cited problems in the high school and board members declined to set a timetable for naming a permanent athletic director. Moises Rael suggested it could be anytime from tomorrow to next year, with the next board meeting set for Sept. 12.
Taos County planning coordinator Allen Vigil reports the housing count phase is finished and maps now detail condition and location of homes. Water studies advance with a second phase grant proposal of about $20,000 to the New Mexico Interstate Streams Commission, prepared by hydrologist Lee Wilson. Vigil notes sketch plans will guide community input on zoning and land use, with no guarantee of universal zoning.
Kit Carson Electric Cooperative customers face a November bill increase as Plains Electric of Albuquerque raises power costs. The hike, a 40 to 70 cent rise per month, comes from higher fuel charges now embedded in base rates. Plains seeks PSC approval Sept 21 to raise demand and energy charges.
An 18 year old Petaca resident charged with a fatal June 1977 stabbing in Taos County was confined to the New Mexico Boys School at Springer. Julian Lovato, who ignored a court order sending him to California, faces a two year to age 21 confinement under the Department of Corrections after a mistrial and plea deal.
The First State Bank of Taos files a countersuit alleging harassment as the motive in a Taos couple's multi million dollar suit against the bank and officers. The bank seeks forty thousand dollars in damages from Richard and Pilar Hendren. The text also covers probate matters in Taos County involving the estate of George Lavender with a hearing set for September 27, 1978 to settle final accounts and determine heirs and distribution.
Weather notes continue with daily thundershowers forecast by the National Weather Service and little temperature change. Temperatures range from mid 40s to mid 80s over the period. Separately, the Hendrens allege harassment against a bank over IRS demands, citing Notice of Levy and administrative summons, with the bank outlining policy and no summons received to date.
A Taos County grand jury indicted Peter E. Galey of Denver on four counts including open murder, aggravated burglary, robbery and larceny. The June 16 stabbing of Glen Barrick occurred near Costilla after Barrick’s pickup, rifle, pistol and over $1,000 cash were allegedly stolen. Police traced Galey to Barrick’s truck, leading to the murder suspicion.
