State-wide black bear hunts questioned in New Mexico
After eight years studying bears in New Mexico, Cecily M. Costello says statewide hunts may be unjustified. The study records a 2 percent maximum population growth and 28 percent human intrusion in bear habitat, with 5,947 bears in 2001 and distributions led by the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountains. She urges regional management and notes hunting success rises when food fails, especially for females.
