Split on Headstart conflict ends with dual directors

Community Action Program CAP faced a split over consolidating county and Taos Municipal Schools Head Start programs. CAP Chairman C J Quintana blocked Aug 7 action. a Monday night session with Taos superintendent Joe E Otero devolved into heated debate. The plan to appoint a single director was rejected, leaving two directors, one for municipal, one for county. Vivienne Baum leads the school system program. Jesse Vigil resigned earlier, creating the vacancy for the county post.

Troy Emmett Denton died August 10 at St Josephs Hospital in Albuquerque at age 58. Born in Oklahoma, he lived in Taos and Cimarron since 1945. Rev George Gonzales led services at Hanson Evergreen Chapel Taos, with burial at Kit Carson Cemetery Taos. Pallbearers were Alton Carter Bill Ross Paul Alvin Burch Bill Angel Leonard Simms Don Koble. Survived by wife Zella Burch two brothers Clyde Denton Palmdale CA and Jack Denton Hatfield OR three sisters Mrs Charles Golden Filo CA Mrs Spencer Bailey Oklahoma City OK and Mrs Owen Rose Phoenix AZ. Jose C. Romero died August 8 at Embudo Presbyterian Hospital in Trampas age 89. Services led by Fy. Christopher Bianco were at San Jose de Gracia Church with burial in Tram Pas Cemetery. Rosaries held August 9 at St. Martin Chapel and Tram Pas Church. Pallbearers listed. Survived by wife Regina and four sons Alfredo Rodarte Floyd Samora Jose E. Sahd Pace Still Fast In New Mexico Campaign

Pete Sahd, Republican candidate for Congress in the August 27 primary, splits time between Albuquerque and Las Vegas to boost regional exposure. He plans to attend a Questa airport dedication on Friday and will return for door to door work in the evening. KOAT-TV telecast and an American Legion conference are set for Saturday. He criticizes opponents’ economic goals as naive and argues economic development is a state and local matter, not Washington driven. He urges Sujan to run for the Legislature, not Congress.

Funeral Held for Elfide Gonzales in Questa

Elfide Gonzales, 73, died August 8 in Albuquerque. He was a resident of Questa. Fr. Armando Sandoval officiated at St. Anthony's Church in Questa with burial at Questa Cemetery. Pallbearers included Delfino Gonzales Jr and others. Survived by wife Ofrecina and three sons and a daughter. Garcia Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Taos Area Schools Plan Enrollments and Consolidation

The district projects 1968-69 enrollment around 600 for the Questa area with consolidation to four schools by 1969-70, removing Objo Caliente options and closing Amalia. Taos Municipal Schools set start Sept 3 for about 3,000 students with registrations Aug 26-30 and new teacher orientation Aug 29.

Taos Students Named to UNM Dean’s Honor Roll

First Race For Perovich

Marko Perovich a Taoseno since 1946 seeks Taos County Commissioner District 1 in the Democratic primary on Aug 27. A petroleum products jobber and propane distributor with a BS in education from New Mexico State University, he advocates proper courthouse construction bidding and possible fallout shelters, while pushing more value from county highway funds. Perovich is a WWI veteran, married to Helen Petrovich, with three children, living in El Prado, and a Mason and Methodist church member.

Larceny Charge Against Amalia Man

A 26 year old Amalia man, Juan Valderas, is jailed in Taos County on a livestock larceny charge with a $3,500 bond after an Aug. 12 arrest by Sheriff Anselmo Valerio, Town Officer Pat Suazo, and Cattle Inspector Julian Archuleta. A criminal complaint alleged he took a calf from Cipriano Salazar of Amalia. Asst. Dist. Atty. Juan Sanchez set bond and said the third degree felony will be heard in District Court.

Deceased Mother's Children May Claim SS Checks

Beverly Keen, social security field representative for Taos County, says a new definition of dependency allows some children of deceased working mothers to qualify for survivor benefits. Benefits may continue to age 22 if in school and unmarried. applications must be filed with the Social Security Office or via Keen during her Taos visits Wednesdays.

Rael Captures Presidents Cup at Taos Country Club

Rael won the Presidents Cup at Taos Country Club with Dr. Albert Roset as runner-up. Henry Archuleta claimed the consolation award, with Tord Good close behind. First Flight winner Harold Cohn led a strong field including Howard Brandenburg second and Charles Foster in the consolation bracket. In the women’s division Mrs. Everett Brooks posted the best rounds ahead of Mrs. Richard Lanser, consolation winner Mrs. Ed Torgerson, and runner-up Mrs. Ruth Brubaker.
