Teachers join Philmont field study for earth science program

CIMARRON Daniel F Cor tez Taos and Tony A Espinoza Questa are two of 30 teachers from across America who are abandoning classrooms for five weeks at Philmont Scout Ranch to participate in the Earth Science Curriculum Program ESCP. Under Dr Keith Hussey the group learns by field work with Scouts in a one to one scale canyon study, earning nine quarter hours toward an advanced degree.

Arthritis fund boosted by Festa Dance event

More than 800 dollars was raised locally for the Arthritis Fund. Mrs Romaldo Garcia and Winifred Legge reported the increase after a Festa dance last Friday. Ernesto Cisneros from Taos County entertained and presented gifts to winners Marshall Vigil and Abenida Romero. Donors are thanked as additional contributions are expected.

Taos center Part II design approved for Coronado Center

HUD funds approved a 242502 grant toward the Coronado Neighborhood Center project in Taos. Part II will finalize design cost estimates and engineering data, with completion likely within one to three months after approval before construction begins. The 14225 square foot center includes a 1400 square foot pool, a 2000 square foot multipurpose room, four 120 square foot offices, and five classrooms for civic and educational use.

New Highway Hearing Promises Discussion on Alternatives

A state hearing will discuss a five mile highway segment with no clear destination and its potential 20 year path to Eagle Nest. The session will cover both route options and accept written statements and exhibits before Sept. 1, plus explain the Relocation Assistance Program for those displaced by highway construction.

All-Star Little League Game In Taos Sunday

An all-star Little League game is set for 3 pm Sunday at Taos Junior High School Diamond. Twenty players from five teams will play, with Montoya Street 7-1, Los Panchos Road 6-2, La Loma 3-3, Ranchos 2-6, and Placitas 1-7 in attendance.

Taos students make spring honor roll at UNM

Two Taos students, Mary Nancy Atkins daughter of Albert J. Atkins Jr and Patrick Henry Finn, and a Taos student named to the spring semester honor roll at the University of New Mexico College, were listed for maintaining a 3.25 GPA or higher over at least 12 semesters. Funeral services were held in Mexico for 48 year old Porfirio Barela who died July 29 in a hit and run one mile west of his home. He is survived by his son Joe Andy and daughter Clarinda B Balencia, his father Frank Barela, and his sisters Victoria Mondragon and Claudina Martinez of Ranchos de Taos. Pallbearers named. Burial at Canon Cemetery. Burial assisted by Hanlon Funeral Home.

Guitar Party at Teen Center on Armory Street

The Teen Center at the old IR.E.A. building hosts a guitar party Saturday from to 11 p.m. Attendees are asked to come as they are and bring a guitar. Admission is 25 cents or a guitar.

Romero awarded Army Commendation Medal in Vietnam

Specialist Four George A. Romero, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tallan L. Romero of El Prado, received the Army Commendation Medal July 12 while serving at the U S Army Depot near Long Binh in Vietnam. He earned the award for meritorious service as a supply clerk. He entered the Army in August 1987 and previously trained at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri before overseas duty beginning last year.

Race track purchase by Newco Industries in New Mexico

Newco Industries Inc has bought controlling 86 percent of Ruidoso Downs stock in southern New Mexico from Gene Hensley Bille Hensley and others. Officers include Eric N. Culver RD Hubbard Tom H Mosier and Richard Aza. Purchase tentatively approved by the New Mexico Racing Commission with formal action due Aug 14. Ruidoso Downs and La Mesa Bark plan joint scheduling to avoid conflicts and boost top stakes.
