Hughes was named president of the Tabor City Civitan Club as officers were announced. The board postponed publishing the delinquent tax list for a month due to farmers busy with strawberry harvest and field work.

County School Superintendent Boyer addressed Rotarians in Tabor City about teacher shortages in North Carolina rural areas. He noted 100000 rural children, many taught by instructors with less than two years of college, and highlighted shifts in A and B certificates from 1941-42 to 1947-48.
Tabor City could lose all mail and express service next week if a strike by locomotive engineers firemen and switchmen goes ahead starting Tuesday. Wilmington’s Atlantic Coast Line would suspend operations if the strike occurs. Acting postmaster Leona G Brown reported no relief plans for Tabor City. Most mail arrives by train and a star route operates from Chadbourn delivering morning railway mail.
Fenton Miller, currently pastor of Pollocks ville Presbyterian Church in North Carolina, will arrive in Tabor City to lead the Tabor City and Loris Presbyter churches. Miller is from Baltimore and studied at Union Theology Seminary in Richmond.
Tabor City Woman's Club will host a hobby show at the clubhouse around May 20 under Mrs. Buck Peay. Anyone with interesting hobby or keepsakes to loan should contact the chairman immediately.
The Tribune credits local citizens for solving a transportation problem when the press car and Linotype operator faced delays. Buck Peay lent a car owned by Paul Norris and Levi Grainger, A A White lent a wrecker, John Soles lent a truck, Grover Jacobs helped start vehicles, and Ed Bridgman got them back on wheels.
The Fortay-Duval veterans office released the April agenda detailing training, readjustment allowances and insurance services. It lists 100 trainings, 19 readjustment benefits, 7 outpatient treatments, 6 loans, 1 employment, and 46 miscellaneous interviews. Fortay-Duval conducts weekly calls from Tabor City with office hours 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays.
Members of the Tabor City volunteer fire department were treated to an annual fish supper in Pireway last Friday night. The event gathered firefighters and town residents for a community meal honoring the local volunteers.
The Tabor City Tribune led with news of an early Friday explosion in Horry County that killed two. The paper halted presses to publish a first hand Bulletin and rework the front page, with photos by Frank H. Lewis displayed in town windows.
Bobby Wright belted a two run homer in the first as the Tabor City Dodgers slugged 11 hits to defeat Chadbourn 8 to 3. Jernigan went 4 for 5 and Stevens 3 for 4 while Ted Fipps was ruled out at second base on a slide.
Sgt Johnnie Ward of Tabor City will leave the 504th Airborne Infantry Regiment in the 82nd Airborne Division to take part in a Third Army Ninth Air Force training maneuver on the Kentucky Tennessee border region in May.
A fish fry for buyers on the strawberry market was hosted at Pireway Wednesday afternoon by the Tabor City Marketing Company. About 15 people attended.
The Tabor City town board approved a map of the Sarvis sub division showing street layout from Sarvis Court at the state line to Lewis streets. The board scheduled a special meeting to consider revising privilege taxes and discussed fire department salaries and city improvements.
No new developments in the Lake Swamp Willoughby home blast as investigators test the cause. Cleyus Willoughby, 57, died. Lula Mae Willoughby, 17, was killed. Mrs. Willoughby survived with injuries and is hospitalized at Mullins. Neighbors heard the blast with reports of distant planes and whistles. hundreds visited the scene as dust-choked roads hampered travel.
Columbus County Democrats vote at precinct polling places at noon Saturday May 8 to elect five delegates to the county convention. The five delegates choose an automatic observer to the county executive committee. AV MRS W F P Barefoot of Wilmington were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs G Garland Fowler. Business trip to Alabama David Kelly on a business trip to Huntingdon D E. Bailey of Chad as visiting friends in City.
Tabor residents enjoyed a Wednesday half holiday as stores closed for the three month period. Crowds flocked to Pireway and nearby fishing spots with many fish tales circulating Thursday morning.
The Tabor City Dodgers routed Chadbourn 13 to 3 in the season opener, piling up 19 hits as Byrd and Stevens combined on the mound for six and a half plus innings. For Chadbourn Mercer led with two hits while Stanley, Wright, and Hughes contributed multiple hits for the TC attack. The Dodgers travel to Whiteville Sunday to face the Comets at Legion Stadium in a eagerly anticipated matchup.
The Carlyle for Congress motorcade paused in Robeson County with about 20 cars and a chartered bus. Lum berton high school band performed as Ertel spoke despite a broken PA system, later fixed by Wade Hodges. Volunteers handed out cards and spoke with local supporters before continuing to Whiteville.
